Passing a Math Heavy Physics Subject With ChatGPT

Published: Updated:

For reasons of destiny, a few weeks ago I had to prepare one subject to finally finish my degree. The subject was Advanced Physics, a very mathematical subject focused on electromagnetism, waves, and similar things.

The problem was that I couldnt go to class. But I still wanted to prepare the subject properly, so I took courage and, instead of going to an academy, I decided to prepare it using ChatGPT

I already had the Plus subscription, with access to the latest version I had available in March 2026, so I entered the web and the first thing I did was create a dedicated space for the subject.

There I uploaded everything I had available:

My idea was simple. If ChatGpt was going to help me study, I wanted it to have the same material I had. I did not want generic explanations from the internet. I wanted help based on my actual subject.

Building the Study Plan

The next step was asking ChatGPT for a study plan

I gave it the official teaching plan and asked it to also take into account what appeared in the last 10 exams. With that, it created a PDF plan for me, day by day. Then I uploaded that plan again to the same space, so it could use it during the study sessions.

That part was more important than I expected. Without a plan, it is very easy to start studying random things and feel productive, but not really advance. With the plan, each day had a purpose.

The Daily Sessions

After that, I was ready to start.

Every day, when I arrived to study, I started the session asking what was planned for that day. I did this to make sure ChatGPT was following the plan and not inventing a new path.

Then we started the session.

Sometimes it explained theory. Sometimes it helped me understand why a formula worked. Sometimes I asked very basic questions because I was lost, and it answered without judging me. That sounds stupid, but it matters. When you are studying alone, especially something mathematical, it is easy to feel blocked by a small doubt and lose one hour for nothing.

With chatGPT I could stop exactly there and ask:

And it answered immediately.

Exercises Were the Hardest Part

All the sessions went very well. Maybe the last weeks were the most difficult, because they were mainly about doing exam exercises.

There ChatGPT sometimes struggled to understand that I wanted a very specific kind of exercise. For example, I would ask for only questions from the last five exams, or only long answer problems of a certain type, and sometimes it mixed things or went a little out of the plan.

But this was not a big problem. Correcting it was enough.

The best way was to guide it again:

When I did that, the sessions became much better. It is not perfect, but neither is a human teacher if you give bad context or unclear instructions.

The Result

I passed the subject with a 7 out of 10.

And this wasnt an easy subject, at least not for me. It had a lot of formulas, physical concepts, mathematical reasoning, and exam problems where one small mistake could destroy the exercise.

For me, this confirms something I already suspected: ChatGPT can be a wonderful teacher.

Not because it magically puts knowledge in your head. You still have to study, think, make exercises, fail, repeat, and sit in the exam. But as a study companion, it has very strong advantages.

What Makes It So Good

The biggest advantage is availability.

It is there 24 hours a day. It does not care if you ask a question at 1 a.m. It does not care if the question is very basic. It does not make you feel stupid for failing in something that maybe you should already know.

Also, it has infinite patience. If one day you are not very sharp and need the same idea explained three different ways, it does it. If you need a simpler example, it gives it. If you want to go step by step through a problem, it can do that.

That is very powerful

In a normal class, sometimes you do not ask because you feel the question is too basic. In a private academy, maybe you have limited time. With ChatGPT, there is no social pressure and no clock in the same way.

The Bad Part

Of course, it also has problems

Sometimes it gets lost in the plan. Sometimes it gives an answer that looks confident but is not really what you asked. Sometimes, when you ask for very specific material, it needs help to stay attached to the documents.

That is why I think the important part is not only “use ChatGPT”. The important part is using it with structure.

Give it the subject material. Give it the exams. Give it the teaching plan. Ask it to create a study plan. Ask it to follow that plan. Ask it to confirm the source of the exercises. Correct it when it goes wrong.

In other words, you need to direct it a little.

My Conclusion

I have to prepare two more subjects for October, and I will use this method again for sure.

For me it was worth it. I saved the cost of an academy, I could study at my own rhythm, and I had help exactly when I needed it

If I were an academy or a private teacher, I would learn how to use this tool as soon as possible. Not because it replaces all teachers, but because it can help students a lot if it is used well.

In my case, it helped me pass a subject that was blocking the end of my degree.

And honestly, that is more than enough.
